Catherine, Academic Tutor

Catherine is an experienced teacher with over 15 years under her belt as Class Teacher, English Lead and Senior Leadership Team in two Sussex schools.

Having been an External KS2 Moderator for East Sussex, she has been into schools across Sussex to moderate the judgements of other Year 6 teachers so is very familiar with the demands of the curriculum and SATs.

Though mainly working with children in years 4, 5 and 6, through her leadership roles she has taught regularly in all years in primary settings. Catherine is passionate about learning having to be enjoyable and engaging and the development of self-esteem, from positive reinforcement, giving the learner resilience and self-reliance for learning and life.

Catherine gets as involved with the learning as the children, enjoying every subject, and says a day never goes by when she doesn’t learn something new! Whether this is learning something about each unique, individual child or seeing the positive impact learning tailored to the individual can have; she enjoys working with children on a 1:1 basis as this allows her to adopt her favoured holistic approach through getting to know every child well.

The most rewarding aspect of tutoring for Catherine is helping children to ‘get it’ and seeing them blossom as a result. Having a busy family life and also being a trustee for a charity, Catherine has wide and varied interests which enable her to bring much life experience to her support of learners. Before teaching, Catherine was a Graphic Designer and this creativity allows her to devise a variety of approaches to suit all learning styles. Catherine enjoys life and learning and brings this sense of positivity and active involvement to all her sessions.

CATHERINE’S THOUGHTS ON TUTORING

Working 1:1 tutoring children is just such a fantastic opportunity to get to know each child, their interests and their preferred learning styles really well to approach the learning in a way which most appeals to that individual child. In this way, a child can be encouraged by their success and truly enjoy their learning - which is what it should all be about!
